In the American culture substantial exposure to media messages is the norm. Children, teenagers, and adults easily spend multiple hours a day scrolling through their social media platforms, reading about the latest trends, or watching pop culture news. While a push for size acceptance through the Body Positivity Movement has challenged how society views body's of all shapes and sizes, the American culture still has an obsession with thinness being the only measure of beauty. This has negative effects on an individual's physical and mental wellness. Specifically, falling into the trap of believing that only thin equates to beauty, can greatly affect your body image and sense of worth. According to the National Eating Disorder Collaboration, body image is "a combination of the thoughts and feelings that you have about your body." As new trends and ideas of what is attractive spread through the media, American's are quick to judge themselves or compare themselves to unrealistic body standards.

Assignment Goal:

This is a simple, clear, and direct assignment that aims to inform students of the impact of the messages that media pushes onto people. In this assignment, students will research and gather information on how media influences body image. Students will then answer a series of questions to help guide their research (all articles and external resources are linked within the lesson). Lastly, students are instructed to create an advertisement that illustrates the dangers of media on teens' body image. Instructions included.
