Fentanyl is a two-part, standards-aligned lesson series designed for middle through high school students. These engaging presentations fulfill the new requirements under California Assembly Bill 2429 (AB 2429) and are crafted to meet the rigor of state-mandated health education. Students will explore what fentanyl is, its extreme potency and associated risks, and how to respond to an overdose using test strips and naloxone.
This resource includes two editable slide decks:
- Fentanyl 101 & Risk Factors
- Fentanyl Detection & Overdose Response
Each lesson is packed with student-friendly visuals, real-life context, discussion prompts, and aligned comprehension checks—making it both interactive and lifesaving.
Educational Objectives
- Fentanyl Foundations: Define fentanyl and identify the differences between synthetic opioids, non-synthetic opioids, and illicit drugs.
- Risk Awareness: Explain the lethal dose of fentanyl and how it compares to other drugs. Understand how it impacts the brain, causes hypoxia, and leads to addiction or overdose.
- Lacing & Illicit Use: Recognize how fentanyl is commonly mixed into other drugs, often without the user’s knowledge.
- Overdose Response: Learn how to identify an overdose, use naloxone (Narcan), and administer aid effectively.
- Detection Tools: Understand how to obtain and use fentanyl test strips, and where they are legally available.
Interactive and Educational Activities
- 10-Question Quiz with Answer Key: A quick assessment to check for understanding after both lessons.
- 20-Question Kahoot Review Game: A fun, competitive review activity that reinforces core concepts.
- Scenario-Based Reflection Prompts: Encourage students to apply their learning to real-world situations.
- Embedded Videos & Visuals: Both slide decks include compelling video content and real-world visuals to engage students and support comprehension.
- Built-In Checks for Understanding: Formative questions are included throughout the lessons to ensure students are processing and applying key concepts in real time.
Teacher Support and Customization
- Teacher Talking Points: Key slides include suggested discussion questions and tips for facilitating sensitive topics.
- Fully Editable: All slide decks are customizable to match your pacing, tone, and student needs.
- Discretion Reminder: A content note is included before playing a student story video to help teachers determine appropriateness for their audience.
Flexible Usage
- Stand-Alone or Curriculum-Aligned: Can be taught independently or integrated into a larger unit such as Not Your Mama’s Health Teacher’s ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs) 8-lesson curriculum.
