Lesson 3: All About the Label (20 slides)

  • The lesson begins with 5 essential questions for students to consider when looking at a food label. 1) How many calories am I actually eating? 2) What can I learn from the ingredients, 3) How much of each macronutrient is in this product?, 4) What is the %Daily Values? 5) What does the amount of sugar tell me?  
  • The slides to follow help students answer those questions. 
  • Slide 15 instructs students to do a quick Google search on their favorite soda/juice.  They are asked to identify how many grams of carbs are in their drink, how many calories, and how many grams of sugar are in their drink.
  • Slide 17 contains a link to a Kahoot! on what students learned in class about food labels.
  • Next Steps Slide includes instructions for what students should complete next.
  • In the “notes” section of the Slides there are some talking points, guides, and ideas, and essential questions for the teacher. 

 

Lesson 3: Info Document 

  • Lesson 3 Info Document contains information learned in the Slide Deck and then some.  Students can use the info docs as a “textbook” for the class. 
    • Explains what a nutrition facts label is and why it is important to review in order to make informed dietary decisions.
    • Describes serving size information
    • Describes calories and per serving
    • Covers nutrients (macro/micro nutrients) 
    • Explains percent daily value. 

 

Lesson 3: Assignments

  • 1.03 Interactive Google Slides "A Tale of Two Foods"
  • Students are asked to select two food items and compare their nutritional facts labels to decide which food item would be a healthier option. Students will fill out the food facts label for the two items they select. They will be asked 7 questions to help them determine which food item is healthier and why.
  • What's Included:
    • A total of 12 pages (+ 2 bonus slides for those who plan on printing):
    • Pages 1-2 - The assignment with instructions along the margins to help students navigate the Google Slides. Cute design that gets student's attention!
    • Pages 3-12 - 10 Sample Food Labels are provided on the assignment, however students can choose food items from their own home, or internet search if they would like.
    • Bonus 2 slides at the end (slide 13 and 14) can be printed out for students who plan on using a pencil. Be sure to delete these slides if you don't want to use them.
    • * Note - Assignment can be shared as a "force copy". This will allow students to have their own copy. Simply edit the URL on your copy by replacing the word "edit" with "copy". Open the new URL with the word "copy", and share that link with students.
    • Assignment can also be downloaded as a PPT to share with students who do not have Google account access.
